I will be reading from the Pevear and Volokhonsky translation, but I have also heard great things about the translation by Anthony Briggs. This translation is ideal because it sticks as closely to the text as possible. The same issue of being loyal to stylistic sound effects pervades the Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky translation of War and Peace. There are essentially twelve English translations (or versions) of War and Peace to date, (if you count Bromfield's so-called "Disney Version" and Komroff's radical abridgement of the Garnett translation -- see my notes below.) As I have already alluded to, abridgements of the work are on the market and I cannot generally .. Two different translations can feel like two entirely different books. Take this short sentence: Kápli kápali. The translating team's Anna Karenina was reviewed in the same magazine here; James Wood discussed the Pevear and Volokhonsky War and Peace here. Most recent fun: a review of War and Peace, translated by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky. As one who gave up reading War and Peace twice but breezed through it the third time because it was the Pevear/Volokhonsky translation, I am delighted to hear that Turgenev is next in line! I bought the Pevear/Volokhonsky translation for the Kindle because my ancient Penguin copy has a small font that's tiring on the eyes. I highly recommend the Pevear and Volokhonsky translation. My edition teeters in at 1273 pages, but some editions go up to 1500 pages. Over the past few weeks, there's been an ongoing discussion of the new Pevear and Volokhonsky translation of War and Peace in the NY Times Reading Room. I chose the Pevear/Volokhonsky by the way.
